The three children of Prince William and Kate Middleton – George, Charlotte and Louis – are the subjects of a lot of media attention. So there are hundreds of photographs of them, and most of these photos are either totally adorable or completely hilarious. Here’s 40 of the best shots of the royal kids being, well, kids.
40. Charlotte smelling flowers
Little Charlotte proved she was shaping up to be a very well-mannered royal indeed when the Cambridges visited Berlin in July 2017. Not only did the two-year-old princess curtsy, she accepted a tiny bouquet of flowers and shook hands with the well-wisher. It was the first bouquet she had ever been given, but there’s surely many more still to come.
39. Airport blues
When the royal couple flew to Canada in September 2016, George seemed pretty tired at the airport. Flying is after all pretty tough on a child. In this picture Kate looks a bit like she’s scolding him, but more likely she’s checking to see if he’s okay. Mother and son also color-coordinated for this event. Both are in blue.
38. Shy Charlotte
In September 2019 Charlotte began attending Thomas’s Battersea School alongside her big brother George. She was all decked out in a stylish school uniform, but unsurprisingly she was a little nervous and hid behind Kate. Not to worry, though. Kate was overheard telling Charlotte that her brother would “help show you the way.”
37. George and Savannah
George is apparently quite close to his cousin Savannah, the daughter of Princess Anne’s son, Peter Phillips. The two of them certainly like to goof off together at family occasions. During the 2018 Trooping the Color, the kids were spotted on the balcony giggling and doing impressions. Savannah even put her hand over George’s mouth at one point, asserting her authority as the older child despite George being the future king.
36. Charlotte arriving at Princess Eugenie’s wedding
Princess Eugenie got married in October 2018 and Charlotte served as one of her bridesmaids. She was quite accomplished at the job by this point — it was her fourth time being one. Though she looks a little grumpy in this picture as she’s being driven to St. George’s Chapel, she behaved perfectly well once the ceremony got underway.
35. George gets a new toy
When George was still a baby his parents took him with them on their tour of Australia and New Zealand. And people were delighted to see the young prince. When the family visited the Taronga Zoo, George was shown a bilby named after him and presented with a toy version of the desert-dwelling marsupial. Alas, just after this photo was taken, George threw the stuffed animal away as babies are wont to do.
34. Kate carrying Louis
When the Cambridge family attended the King Power Royal Charity Polo Match in 2019, the world got a glimpse of a growing Prince Louis. It was a rare occasion in which all three Cambridge kids plus their cousin Archie could be seen together. On viewing the pictures, many people noted how much Louis was starting to look like George.
33. George and his grandmother
During the christening of Charlotte, young George was spotted speaking to his grandmother the Queen. Apparently the two are very close, just as you might expect. Before George was old enough to properly pronounce words he called the monarch, “Gan-Gan,” which is the same nickname Prince Charles used to use for the Queen Mother.
32. Charlotte’s royal wave
In April 2018 little Louis was born and the two older children were taken to London’s St. Mary’s Hospital to meet him. A big crowd of people were there, and Charlotte greeted them with a perfect royal wave. Photographers delightedly captured the moment and Charlotte almost, but not quite, stole the show away from her new baby brother.
31. George smushed against a window
Kids and planes really tend not to mix. In this photo, George squishes his nose against the window of a sea plane about to fly him and his family out of Victoria, Canada. However, George is lucky that he’s allowed to travel with his parents — for decades, heirs to the throne were prevented from taking planes together lest a fatal crash occurred.
30. Something shocking
This picture shows George and Charlotte watching the prize-giving ceremony at the King’s Cup sailing regatta. And they both look pretty shocked for some reason. Perhaps it was because adventurer Bear Grylls let something slip while collecting his trophy — he congratulated George on eating his first ever ant that day.
29. Baby Charlotte
A royal christening is a very exciting occasion. Charlotte’s took place on July 5, 2015, and although she obviously won’t remember it there’s lots of photographs she can peruse in the future. For the ceremony Charlotte was dressed in a replica of the gown Queen Victoria’s daughter was baptized in.
28. George looking unamused
George and Charlotte stole the show at the 2017 Trooping the Color, and they also cemented themselves as mini fashion icons. They color-coordinated with their parents in bright reds and pinks and looked adorable. However, standing still on a balcony is a lot to ask of any toddler, and George definitely appeared quite unimpressed at one point.
27. Charlotte playing football
William and Kate are both very much into football. They take the kids to matches from time to time, and William is even President of the Football Association. And it looks like the next generation of royals are started to take after them. This pic from July 2019 shows Charlotte honing her soccer skills while attending a polo match.
26. George learning to stand
In this shot George meets another George, the bilby at Australia’s Taronga Zoo who is named after him. Obviously the small marsupial is adorable, but what’s even more adorable is watching George’s parents interact with him here. He hasn’t mastered standing up yet, so William is helping him while he studies his namesake.
25. Charlotte crying
Thankfully, the days when royal children were seen and not heard have long gone. The Cambridge kids have been spotted crying in public on several occasions. This picture from Trooping the Color in 2018 shows Charlotte looking near tears while Kate comforts her. According to Palace sources, Kate and William encourage their children to express their emotions.
24. At Hamburg Airport
Charlotte apparently likes to wear the same outfit more than once, as many kids do, and her parents aren’t about to stop her. Here, with her family at the Hamburg airport on July 21, 2017, she wore the same pink dress she’d worn for Trooping the Color the previous month. She carried it off with style, though her dad still had to help her climb the airplane stairs.
23. Louis in sunglasses
In July 2019 Louis attended his first ever polo match, and he didn’t disappoint. The one-year-old prince was photographed not only wearing his mom’s sunglasses (which looked huge on his tiny face) but grinning wildly at his auntie Meghan Markle while he wore them. It was so cute.
22. George blowing bubbles
During the Cambridge’s Royal Tour of Canada, Kate and William took their kids to a party for the children of military families. As The Telegraph reported at the time, “The Prince and Princess’ small faces lit up as they saw the treats ahead of them, including puppets, bubbles and a petting zoo starring a Nubian goat and miniature ponies named Honey and TC.” George seemed to like the bubbles best.
21. Wedding party
This pic shows the little bridemaids all lined up for Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank. There’s Charlotte of course, and she’s joined by Savannah and Isla Phillips, Maud Windsor, Theodora Williams and Mia Tindall. But at the top of the photo it looks like George, who was a pageboy, decided to photobomb the girls.
20. Charlotte sticking her tongue out
In a scene surely familiar to most parents out there, little Charlotte sticks her tongue out while her mother Kate appears to be telling her off. However, Charlotte is in good company when it comes to sticking her tongue out in public. Her uncle Prince Harry used to do the exact same thing when he was a kid.
19. On the balcony
Trooping the Color is supposed to be a serious event. It marks Queen Elizabeth’s birthday and is a royal tradition which has been going since the 17th century. This picture makes it all look rather less sedate, though. Kate appears to be making faces at her son, intentionally or not, while baby Charlotte aims for her neck.
18. Charlotte reading
The royals are big on reading. Kate and William have said that they’ve read The Gruffalo and Room On The Broom to their kids, and the Duchess is also known to have a large and varied book collection. So it’s no surprise the children are readers… but Charlotte seems to have picked an inopportune time for it here.
17. At Pippa’s wedding
This is the sort of vaguely chaotic photo you’d expect from any wedding, but this was a particularly classy one. While not actually a royal wedding, it was the marriage of Kate’s sister Pippa and thus was a very highly publicized occasion. Charlotte served as a bridesmaid and George as a pageboy. And if you’re wondering what the kid next to Charlotte is doing, apparently he’s making a peace sign.
16. George and Charlotte running
George and Charlotte are having fun in the sun here, racing on a field in June 2018. The two royal siblings are apparently best friends as well, according to those in the know. In 2019 an insider told People magazine, “They are close in age, and they spend so much time together. Playdates [with outsiders] can be tricky, so they learn to lean on each other.”
15. Charlotte covering her ears
During the 2019 Trooping the Color flypast, Charlotte was seen covering up her ears at the noise. It was cute, but she’s not the first kids to have been photographed covering her ears on the Buckingham Palace balcony. When Kate and William’s wedding party appeared there back in 2011, three-year-old bridesmaid Grace van Cutsem — the goddaughter of Prince William — was seen doing the exact same thing. It must be loud.
14. Baby Louis
When this cute photograph was taken, Louis’s name hadn’t even been revealed to the public yet. He was simply a new prince, the third child of William and Kate and fifth in line to the throne. However, a few days after departing St Mary’s Hospital the Duke and Duchess did indeed announce his name: it was Louis Arthur Charles.
13. Charlotte having a tantrum
Here, Charlotte appears to be having a tantrum, as kids often do — but Kate is dealing with it. The royal mom apparently has a lot of tricks up her sleeve for when her children have meltdowns in public. She raises a finger at them, like she’s doing here. If back at home, Kate’s said that she puts them in timeout until they’ve calmed down.
12. The kids in the car
This picture of Kate and the kids having a picnic looks like it could be of any normal family rather than a royal one. But for years the royal family members have tried to raise their kids in an ordinary way. William’s mother Diana even took her sons to theme parks, and made them wait in line for the rides like everybody else.
11. Charlotte is given a toy
Part of being a royal, like it or not, is accepting hugs from complete strangers. For the royal Christmas service in 2019, Charlotte and George had to move about the crowds and shake hands just as the adults did. A well-wisher named Gemma Clark stopped Charlotte and gave her not only a hug, but an inflatable flamingo. Charlotte looked a little baffled.
10. Louis sucking his thumb
Trooping the Color is an absolute goldmine for getting shots of the royal children acting adorably. The 2019 ceremony was Louis’s first, but before the family went out onto the balcony the Cambridge kids were seen observing the goings-on from the palace windows. Charlotte was waving… and Louis was sucking his thumb.
9. With toys and balloons
When George and Charlotte attended a children’s party in 2016, it could have gone horribly wrong. Little Charlotte was interested in the balloon arch, a little too interested. Onlookers saw her running towards it shouting “pop!” and then trying in vain to lift the whole thing up. Luckily, a laughing William and Kate stopped her.
8. George looking into Charlotte’s pram
George looks fascinated by his baby sister in her pram as the family went to have Charlotte christened in July 2015. But fans of the royals were interested in George as well, because of the outfit which had been picked out for him. The red-and-white ensemble was almost exactly the same as the one William wore when he met his brother Harry for the first time in 1984.
7. Charlotte laughing
Charlotte was color-coded with her mother when they attended the 2018 Trooping the Color ceremony. But while they were there Charlotte apparently went through every emotion possible. First she was tired, then she was excited, then she was happy, then she was teary. Here’s Kate with her during one of the happier moments.
6. George looking grouchy
When the Cambridges arrived at Berlin in July 2017, George didn’t appear too happy. He looked grouchy, hot and uncomfortable. Luckily, though, he was dressed for the weather — he was wearing a button-up “Chickadee” shirt from Amaia Kids, shorts and leather shoes. So he was very fashionable if nothing else.
5. A fun day out
In August 2019 George and Charlotte accompanied their parents to the King’s Cup event, where they got to have fun and meet kids their own age. Hello magazine reported at the time, “George and Charlotte enjoyed a fun morning on the foreshore in Cowes, taking part in family activities including a tug-of-war with ‘Pirate Pete’ bubbles, and a magician ahead of the afternoon’s racing.” Awww!
4. Charlotte being carried
George and Charlotte were taken to Canada by their parents in 2016 as part of a royal tour. They were met by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who tried to encourage George to high five him. And in this photo Kate looks like she’s also trying to get a high five from a thoroughly uninterested one-year-old Charlotte.
3. Driving to Christmas Lunch
It might be strange to think of the Duchess of Cambridge driving herself and her kids to events, but she does exactly that sometimes. This shot is of her taking the children to Christmas Lunch at Buckingham Palace, where they could expect to receive their gifts on Christmas Eve instead of the day after, in keeping with German tradition.
2. Charlotte flinging herself on the ground
Alas, even royal children aren’t immune to throwing massive tantrums at inopportune times. In July 2017, just before the Cambridge family were about to fly back to England, Charlotte had one at Hamburg airport. Kate took something off her and she responded by sitting on the ground and refusing to move. Kate had to reprimand her. It was a very relatable moment.
1. Kate instructing George
This photo was taken at the King Power Royal Charity Polo Match in 2019, but what exactly is going on? Well, the item Kate is handing George is actually a polo mallet. Other shots from the day, though, prove that George didn’t use it for its intended purpose — he just messed about with it until Kate took it off him again. But he tried! (Sort of).
