Height can be quite deceiving on the big screen. We all know that camera trickery can be used to make actors and actresses appear taller than in real life. But sometimes, no trickery is needed. These 40 leading ladies are all much taller than you realized, and their height has undoubtedly helped them establish a commanding presence on-screen.

40. Queen Latifah: 5 foot 10 inches

Rapper-turned-actress Queen Latifah has been a part of the pop culture landscape since the 1990s. She has always been known for her fuller figure and championing of body positivity. But you might be surprised to learn that Latifah is also super tall. Standing at 5 foot 10 inches, she will likely be putting some of that large frame to good use in her upcoming TV reboot of The Equalizer on CBS.

39. Liv Tyler: 5 foot 10 inches

Liv Tyler – famous for her performances in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and 9-1-1: Lone Star – is 5’10” tall. She is known for her slim frame and, over the years, Tyler’s height has meant that she has towered over some of her male co-stars. The former wrote, “At 5 foot 11 inches, with honey blonde hair, Adrianne Palicki is gorgeous, there’s no doubt about that. But we didn’t realize she’d be quite so, well, amazonian.” And this was an apt description, as Palicki played the Amazon superhero Wonder Woman in a 2011 NBC pilot that failed to go to series.

All of these descriptors are accurate, as Swinton has made a career out of looking different from most other women in Hollywood. Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman is 6’2” – making him a foot taller than the character in the comics. And James Marsden – who played Grey’s lover Scott Summers aka Cyclops – is only 5 foot 9 inches tall. In 2019 Jumanji and Guardians Of The Galaxy star Karen Gillan claimed that male co-stars have had to stand on boxes in scenes with her.
