Picture the scene; you walk into a store and pay with cash, but after leaving the building you realize that you’ve been given an out-of-date coin with your change. In most cases, you’d throw the antiquated penny, nickel, or dime away. However, it may be worth more than you thought to hang on to these pieces of currency. In 1972 the U.S. Mint released into circulation a special cent featuring Abraham Lincoln’s profile. Unfortunately, it was soon discovered that the coin had a glaring mistake – the inscription above and to the side of Honest Abe had been doubled. While embarrassing at the time, the 1972 Lincoln Memorial Cent: Doubled Die Obverse has since become a sought-after item by coin-hunters. Incredibly, one sold for $14,400 in a 2019 auction.
