Deep in a clerk’s office vault in New Mexico’s Doña Ana County a pile of old documents are gathering dust. Unarchived legal papers that tell part of the tale of numerous lives lived many years ago. But in 2016 a report is found among them that will finally reveal the killer of a famous lawman who died more than a century earlier.
On June 5, 1850, Elizabeth Ann Jarvis gave birth to a son, Patrick Floyd Jarvis Garrett, in Chambers County, Alabama. Elizabeth and her husband, John Lumpkin Garrett, already had one child and would go on to have a total of five. When Patrick – who became known as Pat – was three years of age the family invested in a plantation in Louisiana.
